Carrier appetite summary
Great American Insurance Group’s Alternative Distribution / Commercial API platform provides small commercial BOP, General Liability, and Workers’ Compensation, primarily for main‑street classes, with clear class and geographic parameters. Preferred / target business: - Small commercial accounts written via API, especially in office, retail, restaurant, light manufacturing, habitational (certain lodging), auto services (non-fuel), and a broad range of artisan/light contractors and professional/financial services. - BOP and GL appetite guide lists many specific acceptable classes, including: auto parts/supply stores and oil/fluid change shops (no gasoline sales); artisan contractors such as interior trim/cabinet, carpet and floor covering installation, drywall, electrical (inside), fence erection, plumbing, painting, janitorial/commercial cleaning (no window washing), landscaping and lawn care, residential cleaning, etc.; light manufacturing such as bag, cosmetic/personal care (not making ingredients), food (bakeries, crackers, pasta), furniture, electronics and instruments, computer and telecom equipment, paper products, jewelry, leather goods and similar light-manufacturing operations; office/professional risks such as accountants, architects/engineers (consulting/clerical), attorneys, consultants, computer/software and web firms, financial planners, medical and dental offices, insurance agencies, real estate agencies, travel agents, title agents, veterinarians, etc.; restaurants including bakeries, cafeterias, casual and family style, fast food, fine dining, concession/snack bars, pizza, food trucks and mobile food services (subject to BOP eligibility criteria); and retail classes such as clothing, computers, books/magazines/media, candy and confectionery, dry goods, cosmetics, dairy stores, art supplies and numerous other low- to moderate-hazard retail stores. Geographic / availability notes: - Digital small commercial insurance is written nationwide, subject to state-specific coverage availability. - Workers’ Compensation is available in all non‑monopolistic states and Washington, DC, but not in ND, OH, WY, or WA. - BOP coverage is available nationwide except in Alaska, Florida, Hawaii, and Maryland. - BOP and GL eligibility also consider geographic CAT factors such as proximity to coastal regions, storm zones, and wildfire-prone areas; risks in higher‑hazard CAT zones may be restricted or unavailable. Key eligibility and restricted classes/conditions: - BOP is not available for most contractor classes in CA, FL, IL, NC, NJ, NY, NV, OR, SC, TX, and WA. - Artisan contractor criteria include: no more than $1,000,000 annual payroll; no work over three stories; subcontracted work limited to 25% of gross sales; no general contractors; and no renting/leasing equipment to others. - Restaurant criteria include: no 24‑hour operations (typically not open after 11 p.m.); no BOP on frame construction; square footage limits (generally ≤7,500 total sq. ft. for most, up to 15,000 sq. ft. for certain casual/fine dining); alcohol sales capped at 25% of total sales (50% allowed for fine dining); catering away from premises limited to 10% of total sales; automatic extinguishing system required for fast food, casual and fine dining cooking exposures; no bar operations during times when full table service is not available (for casual/fine dining); no entertainment or dancing beyond incidental music, and no entertainment/play areas; no converted dwellings. - Workers’ Comp eligibility generally follows the same class eligibility framework as the BOP appetite; if a class is outside BOP/GL appetite, it is typically outside WC appetite for this program. Submission / broker and producer notes: - Business is placed through Great American’s Commercial API integration under the Alternative Distribution division. Partners must have a front-end capable of API integration and an implementation team; onboarding timelines can be as short as about two weeks, with tailored pricing for the integration. - The carrier emphasizes a fully digital, end‑to‑end workflow for appetite, quote, bind, and issue for small commercial customers. Policies are underwritten by Great American Insurance Company and affiliated admitted companies, and all coverage is subject to underwriting review and state availability. - Producers and distribution partners are directed to contact the Alternative Distribution team (via the "Get Started"/"Start Working With Us" contact links) for onboarding, API documentation, and questions about state or class availability. Operationally, treat the appetite guide as controlling for class eligibility and state availability for BOP, GL, and WC written through the Commercial API. Hard declines or out‑of‑appetite cases include contractor classes in the listed BOP‑restricted states, restaurant operations that exceed alcohol/size/hours/entertainment limits, higher‑hazard construction (e.g., work above three stories, general contractors), and risks in disallowed CAT geographies or monopolistic WC states.
